Interchange Illawarra provides Flexible Respite Support to people with developmental disabilities, their families and carers using both volunteers and support workers. We develop Respite Agreements in consultation with the person who has the disability and their carers and family. Respite Agreements are tailored to meet individual needs and may include being linked with a volunteer/support worker to provide in-home and/or out-of-home support varying from a few hours to several overnights. The support will be available at times and places that best meet the needs of the person with a disability and their families/carers. Another option is a family managed allocation that can be used to arrange support with informal networks to assist in the caring role. Consumers are asked to contribute a minimal amount for the support they receive however inability to pay will not exclude consumers.
Benefits of host/flexible respite include:
• recognition and maintenance of informal support networks • new friends • new experiences for everyone • a support network for the family carer • one on one or small group environment • better community understanding of people with disabilities
